I first found out about Betty Amos reading “Pretty Good for a Girl,” the bible of women in bluegrass.
The image of Betty Amos and her band (The Taylors, who made her be Betty Taylor on stage so as not to give the impression of a rogue young woman playing music) surviving their plane going down and going on to play the gig, says so much about girl power. And by girl, I mean: woman.
Using the story as a framework for a woman leaving a less-than-healthy relationship felt right.
At almost every show, someone tells us their name is Betty and they’re 5-feet tall. That their mom’s name was Betty.
It feels like I’ve joined the best club in the world. Perhaps this could be its theme song?
